Enjoy a day at the beach

The Blue Flag is an international award for beach excellence presented to beaches and lakes, which have excellent water quality and meet other specified criteria including environmental management, litter control and education. With several beaches in County Clare in the Shannon region meeting this standard, why not take some time out to explore them.

Highlights
  • Lahinch – just a short drive from the Cliffs of Moher. The ideal beach for surfing, sea kayaking and kite surfing. Lahinch is a popular seaside town with lots of shops, restaurants and activity providers all waiting to welcome you.
  • Fanore – a sandy beach located in the heart of the Burren where visitors flock to soak up the beauty of this tranquil region.
  • Kilkee – a small coastal town and popular Irish seaside resort. It has a horseshoe shaped bay and is protected from the Atlantic Ocean by the Duggerna Reef which is better know as the Pollack Holes.
  • Cappa – small rocky beach just off Cappa Pier. Stroll the pier and keep an eye out for majestic bird life or if you are feeling adventurous, enjoy a jump from the pier!
  • White Strand (Miltown Malbay) – small rocky beach offering amazing views of County Clare. Located slightly inland near the village of Miltown Malbay.
  • White Strand (Doonbeg) – secluded white sand beach sheltered on both sides by rugged cliffs and very popular for its water cleanliness and safe swimming.
  • Spanish Point – located between Miltown Malbay and Quilty and offering unrestricted views of the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Ballycuggeran – small lakeside bathing area located on Lough Derg, which is life guarded during the summer months offering a safe, tide free place to go for a swim.
  • Mountshannon – located on Lough Derg and offering an ecologically friendly region for swimming and a fun family day out.
