No visit to Westport, or Mayo would be complete without a cruise on Clew Bay. The bay is home to a thriving seal colony, beautiful secluded beaches, breathtaking views of Croagh Patrick, Murrisk Abbey and Bertra Beach (with its untouched sand dunes).
You’ll enjoy sailing past the many sheltered islands, Inishgort Lighthouse and finish the cruise a few metres from the shore of Dorinish Island; which John Lennon owned and stayed on. The remains of the huts and dwellings used by the hippies that called the island home can be clearly seen.
Onboard commentary will guide you through the history of Clew Bay, from battles to tragedies, from the Ice Age to modern day.
John Lennon’s Clew Bay Island Paradise
Bought in 1967 for the sum of £1,700, John Lennon planned to turn the remote island of Dorinish in Clew Bay into a hideaway retreat, shortly before he was shot dead. Described by Yoko Ono as “a place where we thought we could escape the pressures and spend some undisturbed time together“.
Join the cruise and sail right by the shores of the island, and you can see for yourself the beauty and serenity.
