Ireland’s only preserved Victorian gasworks, here at Carrickfergus, 10 miles north of Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Flame Gasworks is Ireland’s sole surviving gasworks and the largest in Western Europe. It opened in 1855 and supplied Carrickfergus with coal gas until 1967. It closed in 1987 but was restored by Carrickfergus Gasworks Preservation Society as a visitor attraction in 2002. View the 36 retorts, ascend the gasholder, and browse the collection of appliances.
