An Elizabethan fortified house

Commissioned in 1583 by Adam Loftus, Archbishop-Chancellor of Ireland, this Elizabethan fortified house combined cutting-edge design with defensive features, including angled corner towers and gun loops.

In the 18th century it was remodelled in grand neo-classical style by architects such as Sir William Chambers and James ‘Athenian’ Stuart. Now restored to its Georgian splendour, it houses fine art, family portraits and antique furnishings, and hosts exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year.
