Founded in the mid-13th century by the Anglo-Norman lord Maurice FitzGerald, Sligo Abbey is a Dominican priory whose atmospheric ruins still shape the town. Much of the original church, chapter house and sacristy survives, complemented by 15th-century cloisters and a bell tower. Though damaged by fire in 1414 and later conflict, it preserves outstanding Gothic and Renaissance tomb carvings and a rare 15th-century high altar, the only one of its kind in an Irish monastic church. Legend links the abbey to lost bells in Lough Gill and to Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
